Kyle Hyde
Age: 33

Kyle was born and raised in Los Angeles until the age of ten.  His father, an infamous safe-cracker and criminal, intended to go straight in order to take care of his wife and kid.  But on his final job he was killed.  Kyle's mother took Kyle to New York where he lived until the age of 30.

Three years ago, Kyle Hyde worked as a detective in New York's 89th precinct.  He and his partner Brian Bradley were meant to be investigating a group of art thieves and con-artists, but the bust went sour when he found out Bradley had gone rouge.  He confronted Bradley at the docks, and when Kyle feared Bradley was trying to escape, he shot him.  Bradley fell into the Hudson River and his body was never recovered.

Kyle took the heat for the shooting and was fired.  He returned to Los Angeles, hoping to get the support of old family friends, and ended up working for his late father's good friend Ed Vincent at Red Crown.  Kyle now works as a salesman, though his real job includes uncovering lost or stolen properties on the side.

Kyle hasn't gotten over Bradley's betrayal three years ago, and is determined to find him.

When Kyle registers at Dusk, he lists his address as:

Kyle hyde
340 E. Ave 48
Los Angeles CA

According to Rachel, Ed has had to bail Kyle out of prison on one or more occasions after Kyle "had a little chat" with someone.

Dunning Smith
Age: 49

The grumpy piece of leather that has run Hotel Dusk for the past five years: he calls it his "little slice of heaven."  He relies on a strict policy of no crooks and especially no cops.  He's a big Hockey fan.

Dunning grew up wanting to be an artist.  During college he became friends Robert Evans, who shared that ambition.  They didn't see each other for many years after graduation, during which Dunning was married and had a daughter, Jenny.  But in 1960 his wife perished in a plane crash, and during the aftermath he was reunited with Evans (who was, ironically, mourning the loss of his wife with his own young daughter, Mila).  As they talked, they came up with a scheme.

Evans owned an art gallery called Gallery May in Santa Monica, which was always going crazy for the "latest" in dead artists' paintings.  He suggested selling some of Dunning's work from the gallery, but not under his own name: instead, they would say the paintings were done by a dead European named Osterzone, someone entirely made up.  Seeing as the art world always appreciated dead painters more than live ones, they could earn some extra money by creating a "mysterious, unknown artist who died for his art".

The scheme worked better than either could have thought--everyone ate up "Osterzone's" work.  They did so well and attracted so much attention that Evans ended up getting noticed by Nile, a criminal syndicate deeply connected to the art world.  But as their success grew, Dunning grew tired of not receiving the praise for the work he'd done.  He saw that Evans was getting in too deep and decided he wanted out.  He told Evans he wouldn't paint again.

Ten years ago, Evans bought Hotel Dusk.  He brought Dunning and his daughter there, and as the two young girls played together he made Dunning another proposition: there was a secret room in the hotel where he could continue to paint (under Osterzone's name).  Again Dunning refused.  But Nile was determined to keep their scheme going, and in retaliation they kidnapped Dunning's daughter Jenny.  They told Dunning that if he ever wanted her back, he would have to keep painting.

Dunning moved into the hotel and continued to paint, as asked.  But three years later he was heart-broken and at his limit.  Seeing that he couldn't go on for much longer, Evans signed the hotel over to Dunning and promised he would have Jenny sent back to him, as long as he was patient.  Dunning had no choice but to believe him.  After that, Dunning never heard from him again.

Having given up hope, Dunning continued to live his days in the hotel, praying that Jenny would return.  Two years later he opened up the Dusk again and started taking customers to keep it going.  But rumors of abductions that had taken place at the hotel (in fact, the very abduction of Dunning's own daughter) kept customers away.  To counteract the hotel's reputation Dunning put out stories in magazines that room 215 granted the wishes of those who stayed there.  It worked, but only enough to keep the place afloat for a while longer.

Rosa Fox
Age: 40

Rosa is Hotel Dusk's maid, who not only cleans but also runs the restaurant (the "Moonlight Grill").  She is constantly on Louis' case to get him to work harder around the place.

Rosa married a sailor, and with him had one son.  But being the independent woman she is, she was determined to take care of herself, and came to work at Hotel Dusk five years ago.  She hasn't seen her husband in several years, and though her son invited her to join him in New York (where he works as a stock broker) she refused.

Rosa also collects celebrity autographs, receiving #50 during the course of the game.  Her first autograph was from an author that she got 16 years ago while working in a diner in Santa Monica.

Louis DeNonno
Age: 25

Hotel Dusk's only bellhop, who mainly does odd jobs around the hotel, including cleaning floors, taking restaurant orders, and running the Hotel's bar, the Seven Stars.  He and Kyle know each other from New York, and he also considers himself a great bowler.  Louie HATES disco music.

In the original Japanese version his name was Louis Franco.

Three years before the events of the game, Louis lived in New York city as a petty thief and pick-pocket.  He was busted by Kyle himself several times.  But Louis's real misfortune came when his best friend Danny started running with Nile, a crime syndicate running insurance fraud scams.  Danny told Louis that he intended to go behind Nile's back and steal some paintings from them to sell on the black market himself.  But of course Danny bit off more than he could chew.  The night he and Louis planned to take their loot and split town, Danny was intercepted by Bradley and gunned down.  Fearing for his life, Louis left town and moved out west, where he eventually made his way to Hotel Dusk.

Melissa Woodward
Age: 8

Daughter of Keven Woodward, whom she doesn't get along with very well.  She's a stubborn kid and a trouble-maker, but mostly she just misses her mother.

Melissa stays in room 219.

Some time before the events of the game, Melissa's mother Grace left them unexpectedly.  But she did leave Melissa a goodbye note, written on the back of the Pinkie Rabbit puzzle she gave Melissa for her birthday.

Kevin Woodward
Age: 35

Melissa's father.  Kevin comes off as clueless and unpleasant, and a rather poor parent.  He's easily frustrated with Melissa and often leaves her alone for long stretches of time.

Two years ago, while working as a surgeon at Robbins Memorial Hospital in Santa Monica,  Kevin lost a patient and was sued for malpractice.  The family won the case for an incredible amount of money that he had no chance of paying.  But then his wife Grace disappeared for a time, and when she came back, she had the money.  She refused to tell Kevin where it had come from.

From that day on, Kevin was of course grateful for what his wife had done, but her silence on where the money had come from broke the trust he had in her.  They fought constantly over it, and finally Grace disappeared one day.  The only clue Kevin had as to her whereabouts was a matchbook from Hotel Dusk.

Mila Evans
Age: 19

Mila is actually the daughter of Robert and Mary Evans.  When she was very young her mother was killed in a plane crash, leaving her alone with her father.  But one night when she was nine years old she was taken to Hotel Dusk, where she met Dunning's daughter, Jenny.  The two girls were put together in room 211 and told to play nicely while their fathers conducted their business.  The girls became fast friends in the short time they were together.

But several hours later the room was entered by several tall strangers, who grabbed Jenny and dragged her out, kicking and screaming.  Mila tried to help but she was thrown down by one of the men and knocked unconscious.

Some time later her father discovered her, and she was rushed to the hospital.  Though unharmed she suffered a great deal of psychological trauma in the wake of the attack, and would not wake up.  She remained in her coma for the next ten years, until awaking abruptly.

No one would tell her where her father was or what had happened to him, so she set out on her own to find him.

Jeff Angel / Jeff Damon
Age: 19

A spoiled teenager who makes a fuss until he gets his way.

Jeff is actually the son of Larry Damon, a prominent L.A. defense attorney who often defends organized crime (especially the crime ring Nile).  Spoiled all his life and sick of his father's ways, Jeff decided to cause some trouble for his father.  He stole his father's gun and $10,000 out of his father's safe, and drove out of town.  Along the way he met Mila, hitch-hiking, and took her with him to Hotel Dusk.

Iris
Age: 28

Iris is a haughty woman who seems used to getting her way.  She finds Kyle especially offensive.

Iris is actually younger half-sister to Grace (Grace is four years older).  Their mother had very poor taste in men, and constantly moved them from one "bad man" to the next.  But when Iris was 9 her mother died in a plane crash, and she and Grace were separated by adoption.

At the age of 15 Iris ran away from home.  She scraped by and eventually came to work at a diner in L.A. at the age of 20,  where she was briefly reunited with her sister.  Afterwards she got a lucky break, and found work modeling.  Under the name Cecily Lee (the game never specifies which is her real name) her career rose, getting her work in commercials and magazine ads.

Two years ago Iris was visited by her sister, who was desperate for money (Iris didn't know at the time, but it was the money to pay for Kevin's malpractice suit).  But Iris couldn't help her, and hasn't seen Grace since.

A few months before the game, Iris received a cassette tape from Grace, with instructions to bring it to Hotel Dusk, should she not hear from her before Christmas.

Helen Parker
Age: 70

A kindly old lady who came to Hotel Dusk hoping to stay in room 215, so her "wish" would come true.  She's been to Hotel Dusk several times in the past.

Helen worked in her younger years as a stage magician.  She was popular and loved the life, until she gave up her career to settle down with her husband.  They had one son, Alan.  But as the years passed Helen missed her old life too much, and eventually she left her family to return to show business.

Again, Helen came to regret her choice.  But twenty years ago she came to Hotel Dusk to perform, and by chance met her son Alan there.  They talked all night, and agreed to meet at the hotel again in ten years.  When Alan said it was his dream to become a novelist, Helen had a pen engraved with his name, and gave it to him as a gift.

Helen returns to Hotel Dusk in hopes of meeting her son again.

Martin Summer
Age: 50

Summer grew up with the dream of becoming a novelist, but ended up instead working as a small time journalist.  One day he met Alan Parker at a café they both frequented, where Alan told Summer about how he also wanted to be a novelist (though Summer never admitted that was his dream as well).  Ten years before the start of the game, Alan finished his own first novel, "The Secret Word," which he intended to enter in a contest.  He gave the draft to Summer to read.  Realizing that Alan had done what he could not, Summer was overcome with jealousy, and he stole Alan's manuscript (and fountain pen), entering it into the contest under his name.  The book won, and was soon published.  Alan, deeply hurt by Summer's betrayal, left town and virtually disappeared.

"The Secret Word" made Summer an instant success.  He wrote several books of his own in the ten years that followed, but none of them were nearly as well accepted.  Just as the guilt was beginning to get to Summer, his assistant Dan discovered the secret of the stolen manuscript.  He blackmailed Summer into paying for his silence.

Rachel
Age: 27

Rachel is Ed's secretary at Red Crown, though she also works as messenger between him and Kyle in the field.  She shows a great deal of concern over Kyle and does a fair share of flirting as well, often calling him "Sweetie."

Rachel shared dinner with Kyle on Christmas Eve, but whether that indicates some greater relationship between them is up to interpretation.

Brian Bradley / J
Age: ??

Bradley's history is mostly unknown.  Three years ago he lived in New York with his kid sister Mila, and worked as a detective for NYPD with Kyle Hyde as his partner.  When they received an assignment to investigate the crime ring Nile, he was chosen to go undercover and infiltrate their organization under the code name J.  The case was successful at first, and Bradley was able to meet Norman, who's real name was Robert Evans.  He learned of the scheme between Evans and Dunning--that they were promoting Dunning's paintings as being that of an old, dead artist.  Meanwhile, Nile was already running insurance fraud scams, in which they would convince galleries to pay a lot of insurance money on their pieces, and then steal the paintings themselves.

Somewhere along the way, the case fell through.  Bradley's identity was discovered, and Evans ordered his little sister Mila kidnapped as insurance.  Bradley had no choice but to feed Nile all the information the police had on them at the time, betraying his comrades.

It then turned out that one of Nile's smaller members, Danny, had made off with the group's most expensive and important painting, Angel Opening A Door--along with a ton of money.  Bradley was again ordered to retrieve both and kill Danny for his betrayal.   With Mila still missing, he complied.

Bradley shot Danny and retrieved the money and the painting, but when the time came to make the trade for his sister he learned that Mila was already dead.  He double-crossed Nile this time and made off with the goods.

By then, the police had also learned that Bradley's work for Nile was no longer just part of the investigation, and reported that he had betrayed the force.  The news enraged his partner, Kyle, who immediately went searching for him.  They met at the docks, and in a thoughtless response to keep Bradley from escaping, Kyle shot him.  Bradley fell into the Hudson River and disappeared.

What happened to Bradley after that is uncertain, up until six months before the start of the game.  He appeared at Hotel Dusk one night and had a drink with Dunning, to whom he confessed his entire story in full.  He added also that he had found Robert Evans a little while ago, and exacted his revenge on him for the death of his sister.  Before leaving, he placed four items throughout the hotel as clues: his lighter, a men's magazine, a small red box, and Dunning's own painting, Angel Opening a Door.

Six months later he contacted Red Crown with a job for Kyle Hyde.

When Bradley registered at Hotel Dusk, he recorded his address as:

Kyle Hyde
1020 West End Avenue
New York, NY

Ed Vincent
Age: 55

An ex-L.A. Detective who now makes a living with Red Crown.  He keeps himself busy with a side job: helping people recover stolen and lost items.  He was at one time a good friend of Kyle's father.
