Chapter 1
Turnabout Trump

"Showdown."

"You lose."

"Uwahhhh!"

"Ahhhhhh!"

Ring...ring...ring...beep.

"...Sorry, but I seem to have gotten mixed up in something."

"...Yeah.  That's about it."

"...Dead. Looks like he was hit pretty hard."

"...Stop it. It's not like that."

"The police are coming."

"I'm counting on you, if...you know."

-------------------------------------------
April 20th, 9:37 am
District Court, Defense Lobby #3.

Odoroki
(Ugh...I really am nervous.)

???
  "Good morning."

Odoroki
 "Oh, Garyuu-sensei.  Good morning!"

Garyuu
  "My, you seem awfully tense."

Odoroki
  "N-Not at all!  I'm fine!"

Garyuu
  "Your voice is shaky... Well, it's not unexpected. Your first case is a murder. It certainly is *surprising*."
[Garyuu is making a reference to Odoroki's name, which means "surprising"]

Odoroki
  "I-I'm fine! I've been practicing my objection since 5 am!"
Garyuu
  "So it seems. Your voice isn't just shaky, it's scratchy."

Odoroki
  "...*cough*." (Did I overdo it?)

*Garyuu animation* (puts his hand on his forehead and shakes his head)

Garyuu
  "As you know, today's client is a close friend of mine. I want to help him...whatever it takes."
Odoroki
  "Y-Yes!  I understand!"

Garyuu
  "I had dinner with him the night of the incident. I can't abandon him now."

Odoroki
  "Y-Yeah, I'm fine!"

Garyuu
  "Ah, by the way. You shouldn't say "I'm fine" so often. It might confuse people."
[In Japanese, "I'm fine" = "daijoubu desu"]

Odoroki
  "Oh..."

Garyuu
  "Well, let's carry on. I think I'll have you greet our client."

N-Not that it's a big deal or anything. My client...is accused of murder. I don't need Sensei to tell me--I want to
save him, too. Because he...he couldn't have done something like that!"

--------------------------------------------

Odoroki
 (...That's right. Right now, I have to concentrate. This is...Housuke Odoroki's first trial!)

-------------------------------------------

Same day, 10:00 am.
District Court, Courtroom 2
Bang!

Murmur...

Judge
  "Well then, the trial is underway."

Payne
  "The Prosecution is ready, Your Honor."

Odoroki
  "The defense is, uh, fine!"
  (Man, my mind went completely blank).

Judge
  "You're...Mr. Odoroki, no? I hear this is your first trial.

Odoroki
  "Y-Yes!  I'm, of course...I'm fine!"
Judge
  "Is that so? Your voice sounds a little scratchy."

Odoroki
  "...Yeah."

Judge
  "Um, Mr. Garyuu?"

Garyuu
  "...What is it?"

Judge
  "I had thought you would be heading this case...?"
Garyuu
  "I had intended that myself. However...as a defense attorney, the wishes of my client come first. And our client
asked for young Odoroki specifically."

Judge
  "Hm...I don't really understand. To pass by Kirihito Garyuu, currently the greatest defense lawyer to be had,
in favor of this young man...?"
Odoroki
  (I-It's fine. I can't lose after all that objection practice I did!)
Bang!

Judge
  "Well then, let us begin the trial. Will the defendant please take the stand?

---------------------------------------------

???
  "・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・"

Judge
  "It truly is a shame. I haven't seen you in so long, and this is what you've become....Phoenix Wright."
Phoenix
  "I'd like if you could forget about the past. Right now, I'm...that's right, I'm a humble pianist."

Odoroki
  (Mr. Wright...)

Judge
  "There's nothing else to say, then. Prosecutor Payne, please explain the details of this case."

Payne
  "I never thought I'd get to 'pay my last respects' to you like this..."
Phoenix
  "You haven't changed...Prosecutor Payne."

---------------------------------------

Payne
  "Well. The incident took place in the Russian Restaurant "Borscht". The accused, Phoenix Wright, attacked a
customer...by beating him to death. Bam! All of a sudden!"

Judge
  "Hmm...a restaurant customer...  But wasn't the defendant...um..."

Payne
  "He was a pianist, working at Borscht."

Judge
  "A pianist...you?"
Payne
  "This is the weapon that took the victim's life. ...It's a grape juice bottle. It seems this was his
favorite--he was always drinking it."

Judge
  "...Let's accept that bottle into evidence."

『Evidence:《The murder weapon: grape juice bottle》 is added to the court record.

Garyuu
  "Odoroki. The evidence is all recorded as files in the court record. Make sure to always check with it."

Odoroki
  "《Court Record》...All right!  I've heard of that!"

Garyuu
  "You can look at it anytime using the R button. Though...I think you'll be fine."

Odoroki
  "The《R button》...huh.  I'd better check it."

Judge
  "By the way, the victim was a patron at the restaurant. Mr. Kagerou Urafushi...?"

Payne
  "He was a traveler, you could say."

Judge
  "A traveler...?"

Payne
  "According to his passport, he's been over seas for several years. He only recently returned to this country.

Judge
  "Did he have some relation to the defendant?"

Payne
   "As of yet, we haven't found a connection. They met for the first time that night at Borscht.

Judge
  "Then, why this incident? Did he insult the pianist's skills or something?"

Payne
  "That doesn't seem to be the case. It didn't happen near the piano.... Here is a photograph of the crime
scene. The incident happened during a game of poker."

Judge
  "Wait a moment. Poker...as in gambling? Isn't that alone a crime?"

Murmur murmur...

Payne
  "That's right.  This defendant...is already a criminal."

"OBJECTION!"

Garyuu
  "It is true that the defendant was engaged in a poker game with the victim the time of the incident, but it was
an innocent game. It was a "match".
Payne
  "A...match...?"

Garyuu
  "Quiet passion...only the cards bearing the blue flames know the outcome of the match."
Judge
  "...............I don't get it."

Payne
  "Cards on the table at the crime scene did indeed have blue backings. As the Defense said so eloquently put, they
were deeply involved in the fight. ...In order to win favor with women.
Judge
  "It sounds like we should hear more about this 'poker game' first."

Phoenix
  ".................."

Bang!

Judge
  "Well then, defendant. Please testify about the "match" the night of the incident."

Phoenix
  "...Very well."

Odoroki
  (It's finally starting...my trial!)

――Witness Testimony――
~About 《the match》~

Phoenix
  "Though I'm known as a pianist...the truth is I rarely play the piano. My real job is to entertain curious
customers. With poker, of course. The room that's now a crime scene was a selling point of the shop. That's where
the 'matches' take place. The rules are very simple. We use two decks of cards to play. ...Of course, it's only
an innocent game. The customers are satisfied with that."
Judge
  "...Hm. A pianist who doesn't play the piano...?"
Payne
  "Better than being a defense attorney who doesn't stand in court."
Judge
  "............Well then, if the Defense would please begin its cross examination."

Odoroki
  "Y-Yes!" (Cross examination... Come on, Housuke!)

Garyuu
  "Are you all right? There's sweat on your brow."

Odoroki
  "Y-Yes!  I'm fine!"

Garyuu
  "Your voice is still scratchy. It's hard to hear."
Odoroki
  "I have the feeling my brain is all scratchy, too."

Garyuu
  "You've seen me do cross examinations several times by now, but this is the first time you've done it
yourself.  Shall we practice first?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Odoroki
  (What should I do?  Ask Sensei about cross examinations?)
"I have to give my answer!"
→ Hear the explanation of 《cross examinations》
 That's not necessary
Odoroki
  (If I trip up here, I won't even be able to get started!)
Odoroki
  "Please, teach me from the beginning!"
Garyuu
  "Listen, Odoroki.  Look at the "testimony" and "court record"...and find the contradictions.  Then, once
you have...《present》 the data from the court record at that point in the testimony."
Odoroki
  "But Sensei!  There wasn't anything fishy in his testimony..."
Garyuu
  "In that case, you can 《press》 the witness.
Odoroki
  "《Press》 the witness..."
Garyuu
  "He is an excellent man.  Let's pull some information out of him."
Odoroki
  "But Mr. Wright is *my* client..."
Garyuu
  "Well?  Can you do it?"
Odoroki
  "Yes!  You sure are great, Sensei!  Somehow, I feel like I can do it!"
Garyuu
  "...If you couldn't, we'd be in trouble.  In any case...try to find and prove the "contradictions" and "lies"
in his 《testimony》.  That is 《cross examination》.  Let's start by pressing him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Odoroki
  (What should I do? Should I ask Sensei about 《cross examinations》?)

I have to give my answer!

 Hear the explanation of 《cross examinations》.

→ That's not necessary

Odoroki
  "I don't need Sensei on this! I can do this myself!"

Garyuu
  "...Said like a true 'subordinate.' Are you sure you're all right?"

Odoroki
  (I'm fine! I've had plenty of practice! My weapons are 《pressing》and
《presenting》...)

Garyuu
  "Find and prove the 'contradictions' and 'lies' in his 《testimony》. *That* is a 《cross examination》. Let's
start by pressing him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Odoroki
  ("Lies" and "contradictions"....  Would Mr. Wright...no, that's not possible!  And I'll prove it!)
Judge
  "Well then, the defense should please begin its 《cross examination》."
――Cross Examination――
~About 《the match》~
Phoenix
  "Though I'm known as a pianist...the truth is I rarely play the piano."
  "Hold it!"
Odoroki
  "You really don't play...?"
Phoenix
  "I do, sometimes, when the customers bug me with requests.  Well, if I play at least one song, that usually
shuts them up."
Odoroki
  (Was he bragging just now...?)
Phoenix
  "Well, a 'pianist' is a fleeting figure that creeps through the world...or something like that."
Judge
  "So...why *were* you at Borscht?"
Phoenix
  "My real job is to entertain curious customers. With poker, of course."
 "Hold it!"
Odoroki
  "Can you make money just by playing poker?"
Phoenix
  "Something like that.  I'm a 'pro' after all."
Payne
  "Hm, what a life.  It's a world a serious person probably can't imagine."
Phoenix
  "That's right...I'm sure you can't imagine it at all."
Payne
  "W-What was that!?"
Phoenix
  "I've been playing poker in that tiny room for seven years.  In that time, I've never lost."
Odoroki
  "What...?"
Phoenix
  "Isn't it obvious?  The customers come to play against 'a poker player who's never lost'.  And to beat me.
Odoroki
  "B-But still!  To have never lost once..."
Phoenix
  "That's what being a 'pro' is about."
Odoroki
  (He's never lost once...in a Trump match?  Is that even possible...?)
Phoenix
  "The room that's now a crime scene was a selling point of the shop. That's where
the 'matches' take place."
  "Hold it!"
Odoroki
  "The room in this picture...was 'special' somehow?"
Phoenix
  "It seems that way.  《Borscht》 used to be a meeting place for underworld."
Odoroki
  "Underworld...?"
Phoenix
  "Of course, the 'underworld' only exists in movies in today's world.  In any case, that small room...
used to be is where many 'backroom deals' were made."
Judge
  "Now that you mention it, looking at this picture...I do get a 'bad' feeling from it!"
Phoenix
  "The bosses would met at that table, unseen by the police, while their underlings kept watch at the small
window...  Or something like that.
Odoroki
  (Those windows really do look too small to be good for anything other than keeping watch.)
Phoenix
  "That room had one more use, that a lot of our regular customers knew about.  You could come play poker in that
room that already had so much history.  It was an innocent way to get a thrill."
Phoenix
  "The rules are very simple. We use two decks of cards to play."
  "Hold it!"
Odoroki
  "Two decks?"
Phoenix
  "To keep people from cheating.  If you use two decks, you can't change so easily, right?"
Judge
  "That is true...  There are cards on the table, and on the floor..."
Garyuu
  "That's right.  The cards on the table and on the floor...are each from one deck.  The blue cards found at the
crime scene, were painted the color of loneliness.  It's almost like a poem."
Phoenix
  "Speaking of which, the cards used at Borscht are all either 《red》 and 《blue》.
Judge
  "Hm....  Poker is a game where you use five cards to determine your position*.  It would be easy to cheat."
Phoenix
  "Hm...a game for determining your 'position', huh..."
*[The word he uses is "yaku", I'm not exactly sure how to translate it in this context]
Odoroki
  "...?"
Bang!
Judge
  "I have the feeling we've come to understand the nature of this "match".
Odoroki
  "Th-That's right!  It was just a game!"
Judge
  "I wonder about that."
Odoroki
  "Huh?"
Judge
  "Murders don't occur during simple games.  Defendant.  You were at the scene the moment the crime occurred.
But still you claim you had nothing to do with it?"
Phoenix
  ".....That's strange."
Judge
   "What is?"
Phoenix
  "Just now, I was testifying as to the 《match》 the night of the incident.  Asking me about the incident itself
is against the rules.  I figured I'd hear an objection right about now."
Odoroki
  "Ah.....!"  (Damnit!  I was too intent on listening...)
Garyuu
  "Wait a moment, Odoroki."
Odoroki
  "S-Sensei...?"
Garyuu
  "Wright.  I myself would like to hear, from you, exactly what you have to do with this case."
Phoenix
  "...............If you say so."
Bang!
Judge
  "Well then, defendant.  Please correct your testimony."
Odoroki
  (This is how you 《press》, huh...?  This is the way to pull out new testimony!)
Phoenix
  "I'm staying silent on what happened.  But I can at least say I didn't touch the murder weapon."
Orodoki
  (It's Mr. Wright testifying...I can't imagine that he'd lie.)
Garyuu
  "It's too early to come to any conclusions, isn't it?  It's the first cross examination--there's no reason
to rush. ...If you need more information, don't forget you can 《press》.
Odoroki
  "...Y-Yes!  I'm fine!"  (I'll listen to his testimony one more time)."
 。
 。
   。
   。
     。
     。
Phoenix
  "...Of course, it's only an innocent game. The customers are satisfied with that."
  "Hold it!"
Odoroki
  "It's not 'gambling'.  In the end, that's what you're saying, isn't it?"
Phoenix
  "It's just an innocent game."
Odoroki
  "Are you really...not betting anything?"
Phoenix
  "I'm only betting one thing: my pride."
Judge
  "Ho ho.  That's kind of cool!  I kind of want to challenge someone at poker myself.  By betting your verdict!"
Odoroki
  (As if I'll let it be decided by a game!)
Phoenix
  "I'm staying silent about what happened.  But I can at least say I didn't touch the murder weapon."
  "Hold it!"
Odoroki
  "K...Keeping silent?"
Phoenix
  "A defendant has the right to refuse testimony.  ...That, at least, I know very well."
Odoroki
  "But if you do that, it'll be bad news for you down the line..."
Phoenix
  "And isn't it your job to do something about that?"
Odoroki
  (Uhhh...that's crazy.)
Garyuu
  "Odoroki.  More importantly...isn't there something bothering you?  About his testimony?
Odoroki
  "Huh...?"  (I do get the feeling there was one strange part in Mr. Wright's testimony...)
Garyuu
  "If something bothers you, you should try 《presenting》 your evidence to show the contradiction.
Odoroki
  (A contradiction in Mr. Wright's testimony...?  But how?  I'd better check the court record...)
Phoenix
  "I'm staying silent about what happened.  But I can at least say I didn't touch the murder weapon."
《Present》Murder Weapon - bottle
  "OBJECTION!"
Odoroki
  "You just said...you didn't touch the murder weapon...that being this bottle...right?"
Phoenix
  "I did say that."
Odoroki
  "................"
Judge
  "What is it?"
Payne
  "Fu fu fu fu fu...."
Fwoosh
Payne
  "Looks like the defense...isn't completely brainless."
Judge
  "Wh-What is it, Prosecutor Payne?"
Payne
  "This bottle, which was used as the murder weapon...clearly has the defendant's fingerprints on it!"
Murmur Murmur...
Deskslam!
Odoroki
  "The defense...has an objection!!"
Judge
  "You don't have to yell so loud.  We can hear you!"
Odoroki
  "...Uh."
Garyuu
  "Needless yelling ruins the Judge's ears, which are his livelihood."
Odoroki
  (Uhhh...and I did all that practicing, too...)
Deskslam!
Odoroki
  "A-Anyway!  It's obvious why someone who works in the restaurant would leave fingerprints on a bottle!"
Judge
  "Yes, that's true.  You can't call him the criminal just from that..."
  "OBJECTION!"
Payne
  "Yes, it makes sense.  If they were...normal fingerprints."
Odoroki
  "...Huh?"
Payne
  "The fingerprints we discovered on the murder weapon...were back-handed."
Judge
  "'Back-handed'...?"
Payne
  "When fingerprints on a bottle display a back-handed grip, it can only mean one thing.  ...That it was being
used to hit someone!"
Odoroki
  "Ahhhhhhhhh..........!"
Murmur murmur....
Odoroki
  "Garyuu-Sensei!  I'm--I'm in trouble!"
Garyuu
  "...What?  You're fine, Odoroki."
Odoroki
  "S-Sensei..."
Garyuu
  "...It's the truth that's important.  There must be a 'reason' for them."
Judge
  "Defendant!  I'd like you to explain the fingerprints on this bottle!"
Phoenix
  "Like I said, I'm staying silent on what happened.  ...For now."
Judge
  "*sigh*...Such an uncooperative attitude.  We have a problem."
Payne
  "Indeed.  He must be hiding some kind of important information."
  "OBJECTION!"
Deskslam!
Odoroki
  "Mr. Wright isn't hiding any...th....!  Huh?"
Garyuu
  "What's the matter, Odoroki?"
Odoroki
  "Nothing, Um... my... voi... ce.... is.... g, gone...............!  ....................? (Damn).
Garyuu
  "...My my.  I told you not to overdo your 'objection' practice.  Thank goodness this isn't the real thing."
Odoroki
  (....That's right, I still have time before the real thing.  Next time I won't let this happen!
The back-handed fingerprints...the reason for Mr. Wright's silence...  No matter how I cry, my voice won't
work...!  ....This is what being a defense attorney is about!)
Deskslam!
Odoroki
  (I'd better practice my objection even more before the release date!)
Chapter Over!
[The rest is what the Judge says if you show the wrong evidence, but none of it is especially interesting - a lot of "I don't see the connection here" etc.]
