Spoiler: AAI-5
Byrne wasn't just assigned to the Yatagarasu case, he was Yatagarasu.  Specifically, a part of it.  When he and Badd lost KG-8 he decided that there were limits to the law, and in order to get justice they would have to take matters into their own hands.  With the help of Calisto Yew, the victim's sister, they formed Yatagarasu and began stealing incriminating documents from the companies they weren't able to catch in the courtroom.  7 years ago, Byrne used his thief device (which would later be named Little Thief by his daughter) to sneak into the Cohdopian embassy and steal an important object, a key.

What he didn't know was that his own comrade Calisto was already working for the very criminals he was after, and when she realized that he was getting too close to the truth, she killed him.

Background: 10 years ago, Kazura's younger sister Cece worked for the Amano Group, and was exposed to various illegal activities.  Before she could testify against her employer in court, she was murdered in her apartment by Manny Coachen.  Byrne and Badd were not able to get Manny convicted, and she held a grudge against them for years after.  She became a defense attorney so that she could use her position to get information about the company behind it all.

Spoiler: AAI-5
No one knows Calisto's real name, but we do know that at some point she started working for Quercus Alba, head of an international crime syndicate.  When Manny was charged with the murder of Cece Yew and almost convicted, Quercus sent Calisto to pose as her sister in mourning.  What Quercus' true objective was is not certain, but Calisto was able to us her "grief" to stay close to the two men, and together they formed the 3-person Yatagarasu team.  For the next three years they stole documents from corrupt companies and exposed their crimes to the media, all the while Calisto kept an eye out to make sure they didn't get too close to Quercus himself.

However, then Byrne stole from the embassy an important item, and planned to use it along with testimony from Deid Mann to get closer to Quercus' organization.  As part of her cover up job she hired Mack Rell to kill Deid Mann before he could testify, and it worked, but he was dumb enough to get caught on camera.  Fearful of what might happen if Mack was convicted, Quercus ordered Calisto to take care of Byrne.  At first Calisto planned to ruin him, and had Mack accuse him of being Yatagarasu in open court, but then Mack's will faltered.  With no other way to keep her and her boss' secrets Calisto killed her "friend" Byrne and fled.

After the case, Calisto completely changed her appearance and took on a new identity.  Still under Quercus' orders she infiltrated Interpol as a top ranking investigator, and used her position to continue to spy for him.  Until AAI...

Tyrell Badd / Ittetsu Badou
場堂一徹

Age: 53 (in case 4)
Gender: Male
Height:
Occupation: Homicide Detective

Witness of GK case 4.

Personality: Tyrell is a hardened veteran cop, straight to the point and no nonsense.  He does, however, have a soft spot for sweets and children.

Misc Facts: He calls Edgeworth just about every variant of "boy" "kid" and "child" the Japanese language has to offer.

The holes from his coat are all from bullets.

Friends and Family: Worked closely alongside Prosecutor Faraday.  Has known Kay since she was born.

Name Origin:
English
: Probably meant to sound like his Japanese name.

Japanese: His first name means "headstrong." Badou may come from twisting the romanization of the word "bird" (baado).

Background: Tyrell has worked with Byrne for years, taking on important cases together such as KG-8 and Yatagarasu.

Spoiler: AAI-4
10 years ago Tyrell was put on the KG-8 case.  It was his job to protect Cece Yew until she could take the stand as a witness.  However, he failed in his duty, and she was killed by Manny Coachen.  He blamed himself for a long time for this, and bore the hatred of Cece's sister Calisto Yew.

Then 3 years later, the same thing happened: he was unable to protect witness Deid Mann, and then two days later his partner Byrne was murdered in the courthouse itself.  At first he thought that Gumshoe was the murderer, but Edgeworth revealed the truth: it was Calisto, who had betrayed them all in more ways than one...

Spoiler: AAI-5
What the public doesn't know is that after Byrne and Tyrell failed in the KG-8 case ten years ago, they felt so devastated by the loss that they formed Yatagarasu, a three person team dedicated to catching corrupt companies by stealing incriminating evidence and passing it to the police.  Their third member was Calisto Yew, whom Tyrell felt he owed, since it was her sister he had failed to protect.  Their ultimate objective was to take down the criminal syndicate headed by Quercus (though they did not know it was him at the time).

Byrne snuck into the Cohdopian embassy and stole a key that would lead them to important, incriminating documents, but before they could use it Calisto betrayed them and killed Byrne.  Tyrell looked into her history and learned that Yuuko never had a sister: Calisto was a plant from the start.

For the next seven years Tyrell dedicated himself to tracking Calisto down so he could avenge his fallen friend.
