Background: Teikun came overseas in order to strengthen diplomatic ties between two nations, and also as thanks to the prosecutor's office (namely, Edgeworth) for its efforts in AAI which were of great benefit to Zheng Fa.

Following the chaos in Zheng Fa caused by Alba's crime ring, Teikun was eager to get his country back on track and show himself off as a powerful and capable leader. Unfortunately, he wasn't that, so he decided to fake an assassination attempt on him in order to appear stronger than he really was. Knowing that his lead bodyguard, Tojiro, would never agree to such a stunt, he instead entrusted his plans to Naitou, and realized too late he was not a man to be trusted.

Now for the real spoiler: the Teikun we meet in the game isn't the real Teikun.

The real Teikun was a bold and respected ruler, who while visiting Japan had a secret affair with Ami Aizawa. He returned home, and nine months later, heard from Ami that she had given birth to a healthy baby boy, whom she named Shimon. Teikun returned to Japan in hopes of meeting his secret love child. However, at the same time, his body double and doppelganger plotted to kill him and take his place. To this end he hired assassin Ryouken, who intercepted Teikun at the orphanage where he had planned to meet Ami. Teikun was murdered, and his double took his place as Zheng Fa's president.

But the double wasn't nearly as qualified as the real Teikun. His country fell victim to smugglers and counterfeiters, and he had to resort to defaming the Lang clan to keep his secret hidden. When he came back to Japan he learned, through Mikagami, that the real Teikun's biological son was still alive, and thinking that the blood relation could one day be used against him, he planned to kill Mikagami and Shimon.

Misc Facts: Has a great fondness for chess and fancies himself as a knight, protecting his king.

Name Origin:
English:

Japanese: "Naito" comes from "Knight," as in the chess piece, and his first name includes the kanji for "horse."


Background:  Naitou has served as Teikun's bodyguard for a long time, and though not being originally from Zheng Fa he earned Teikun's trust and (we're told) saved his life on several occasions.

However, when professional assassin Shelly de Killer infiltrated Teikun's bodyguards and nearly accomplished his goal of killing the president, Naitou was the first to be incapacitated and was of no help to his leader. It was head of security Tojiro that wounded and thwarted de Killer, inflaming Naitou's already long-burning jealousy. Later, Teikun approached Naitou with plans for a fake assassination attempt on his own life, as a means of bolstering his public image. Though Naitou was glad to have been trusted over Tojiro with the endeavor, he could sense that Teikun was wary of him, which only made him more bitter. He decided to use the fake assassination to carry out his real murder of Tojiro, thus securing himself as Teikun's top bodyguard.

As a child, Naitou was raised by his overbearing father, Isaku Hyoudou. His best and only friend was Souta Sarushiro, who was the son of Hyoudou's accomplice, Yutaka Kazami. This came to an end the night before Tenkai's pastry chef competition. Hyoudou and Kazami had agreed to work together, but at the last minute Hyoudou went back on his word. He ordered his son to attack and restrain Souta, preventing him from helping Kazami during the final challenge. Naitou was too frightened to disobey: he attacked and tied Souta up, and held him hostage in the back of his father's car. They waited all night for Hyoudou to come get them, but he never came (as he was murdered by Kazami during the competition).

Naitou and Souta might have frozen to death in the car, if not for having been discovered by chance by Ryouken and his dog, Kuro. He rescued the boys and left them at a nearby orphanage. The shock of the ordeal left both with holes in their memory. Though Naitou remembered little of the circumstances surrounding their abandonment at the orphanage, Souta mistakenly pieced together enough information to assume that Naitou's father had murdered his father, rather than the other way around. For years they grew up together, Naitou never realizing that Souta was holding onto a terrible grudge, waiting for the opportunity to get revenge.

Personality: Mikiko is your typical hot-blooded Osakan with a dash of genki-girl thrown in.  She is extremely exuberant about her job and is always asking questions, though sometimes her temper gets the better of her.  Strives for the big scoop!

Japanese: Comes from hayamimi, a keen listener.

Background: Mikiko came to Teikun's speech hoping to pick up on a big news scoop!

 

Spoiler: AAI2-1
Instead, she was roped into Naitou's fake assassination plot. Hoping to generate some real news, she agreed to point her laser pointer at Teikun to mimic a rifle's laser scope. She then dumped the evidence and hid in the crowd. That should have been the end of her involvement, but when a real dead body came on the scene, Naitou turned on her and tried to get her accused of the murder he committed. Lucky for her, Edgeworth was on the scene.

MMisc Facts: Shelly values the trust between himself and his clients above all else.  In AAI2 he masquerades as an ice cream salesman.

Name Origin:
English: John Doe is the police term for an unidentified dead body.  "Shelly" is a reference to his calling card, the conch shell, and "de Killer" to his profession. 

Japanese: Tanaka Tarou is the Japanese equivalent of John Smith (the most common, plain name you could think of).  Koroshiya literally means "assassin." Sazaemon comes from the word sazae, which means "a seashell." Sazaemon leaves a calling card with a seashell design whenever he commits a murder.

He was hired to kill Teikun Ou, and to that effort infiltrated Teikun's bodyguards, and might have succeeded if not for Tojiro. Two weeks later he tried again at Gourd Lake, unknowingly coinciding with the fake assassination plot cooked up by Naitou.
Spoiler: AAI2-5
The contract on Teikun was ordered by Souta Sarushiro. But when Teikun ended up dead, killed by Souta himself, Killer perceived this to be a breach of trust between him and his client. He was also none too pleased by the revelation that Teikun was not the real president. Outraged by Souta's betrayal and deception, he contacted Edgeworth, hoping that in the process of solving the case, Edgeworth would lead him back to his traitorous client.
